Una McCann has been the choir leader at the front of Antrim Community Choir (ACC) since 2012. She is based in Belfast and works full time as a choir leader, songwriter and musician. Una has been leading groups in harmony since her school days and has been working professionally with adult choirs for 13 years.

Una has a degree in music from Queens’ University and a PGCE in music from Bath Spa University. However, most of her musical training came from her family and from playing music by ear around the kitchen table at home. She ran groups from age 11, teaching harmonies to her friends and competing in competitions.

Una’s secondary school music teacher, Maire Mannion was a huge inspiration. As the school music teacher, she taught 3 and 4 part complex choral pieces to a non-auditioned choir. Everything was taught by listening and repeating, just like we do in Antrim Community Choir.

Antrim Community Choir operates in line with the Natural Voice Network principles (see www.naturalvoice.net). We believe that singing is everyone’s birth-right and that there should be no obstacles to inclusion in community singing. There are no auditions to join ACC.

The smooth running and the success of ACC owes a great debt to the tireless work of the charity committee, not least Chairperson; Marie Mulholland who began the choir back in 2012. Alongside Treasurer; Adele Carroll and more recently Secretary; Noreen Friel, the management of the choir has gone from strength to strength under their care.

Together Una and the ACC have enjoyed many adventures from their first project ‘Delusions of Grandeur’ where the choir sang at stately homes and old castles around Northern Ireland all the way to wonderful collaborations with Irish and Northern Irish bands; The Henry Girls, Malojian and Lore.

Una currently runs 6 Natural Voice style choirs singing with over 250 people each week. She also enjoys running singing holidays and retreats. A highlight last year was conducting a choir of 250 people representing County Antrim as part of BBC Sings at the iconic Ulster Hall in Belfast.

As a songwriter, Una embraces words that reflect her outlook on life; encouraging people to be kinder to each other and to work in harmony together. She especially enjoys the joy and connection that emerge within a group when we sing together. Una encourages her singers to be wholly present, to listen intently, to be sensitive to each other and to try their best.
